Jonathan McKee Sweeps both Legs of the Mini Pavois
International Singlehanded Yacht Race
May 29, 2003
Dournanez,
France: On Wednesday the Mini Pavois, a single-handed race
forthe Mini 6.5 class, ended at Dournanez, with American sailor
Jonathan McKeefinishing in the early morning hours, 3 hours
and 10 minutes ahead of secondplace sailor Pascal Doin.
McKee also won the first leg from La Rochelle to Portsmouth,
but his overallvictory was still in doubt at press time, as
it was determined that hemissed one of the marks on the first
leg. "I made an error, I recognizethat, but to classify me
in last place would be too hard a sanction." saidMcKee. The
decision on McKee (and four others who missed that mark) was
tobe decided on Wednesday night. In any case, the moral victory
has to go toMcKee in dominating both legs of the race in this,
his first single-handedMini 6.5 race.
Brieuc Mainonneuve on Groupe SIM Travail Temporaire took the
victory in theSeries class, winning the first stage and staging
a terrific comeback in thesecond after a bad start. The Norman
sailor has his mind set on the next bigchallenge: the Transat
6.50 Charente-Maritime/Bahia on September 7. Nextweek he has
a meeting planned with his sponsors about that race; hisvictories
here are perfect timing.
